Yes, Lize you are so right! And our daily bread only sustains us for the day. The next day we need to find new bread to feed us. Make sure you are in God’s word every day! 🙂
Thank you for letting me know Cinda! I have removed the Vimeo links and added a link to your new Youtube channel. 🙂 And I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your work – it has been a blessing to me and my family personally. May God continue to use you!
Thank you for sharing your inspiring thoughts! Another great way to memorise Scripture is the Bible memory app Remember Me (https://www.remem.me). It’s free, fun and effective. No ads, no restrictions.
It features multiple study methods (word puzzle, fill in the gaps, scripture typer), randomly generated quizzes, flashcards with spaced repetition, listen to Bible verses or record yourself, Bible verse images, retrieve scriptures from online Bibles, share public verse decks, sync with multiple devices, numerous Scripture translations, versatile labelling and filtering
This is beautiful. Just what I’ve been looking for. I’m looking forward to a lot of learning and tips, God bless you for Sharing. Please do not stop ??
Hi Mercia
With regards to the Sonlight curriculum, there is no need to register with Sonlight and no cost involved – it is free to download and then you print what you want to use. Click the Sonlight link above (or click here: http://www.miraclesinslowmotion.co.za/sonlight-education-ministries/) to learn more about it! I hope this helps!
I love to read a day in the life of how this material looks in your home. We are preparing to start with all 3 of my children next fall as my youngest will be 2nd grade. Thanks!
hello, I am Dewi. I am mom of two and live in Indonesia. I looking for a right curriculum for our family. And Sonlight be our chosen curriculum. But, how about grade 9 – 12 … ? you say that its still developed? Can we continue to other curriculum, if we start our journey with Sonlight until grade 8?
It is excellent that you are thinking ahead and trying to get the big picture of where you are heading with your children’s education. These are not easy questions to answer as I don’t believe there is one right answer for all families. Ultimately, you need to have a good think about what you are trying to achieve in educating your children.
Do you want them to have some kind of high school senior certificate which they may require to study further at a college or university? If so, this is still achievable – I know of a family which, after finishing the Grades 2-8 lessons, changed to the ACE curriculum which allowed them to get our South African Matric (Senior) certificate and study further in Europe. To do this, just make sure you keep up with your necessary language subjects and Maths while doing the Grades 2-8 lessons. Sonlight covers most other subjects like Biology, Geography, Health, History, Music etc and your child should be able to cope with the change.
On the other hand, I also know many children (mostly boys) who stop normal ‘schooling’ at 15 years of age and pursue a more hands-on technical course like agriculture, electrical, carpentry, engineering etc. Here, in South Africa, school is only compulsory up until the age of 15. (This would be before the start of Grades 9-12 lessons). So your decision is obviously also impacted by your country’s education laws.
After completing the Grades 2-8 lessons, Sonlight believes the student should be ready to now start doing their own research and writing their own text books using the subject outline provided. If you take a look in the Catalogue, Road Map and Route you will see the suggested outline for each Grade 9, 10, 11 and 12. Study guides are provided for certain subjects and for other subjects you will need to find your own suitable textbook (as suggested). For other subjects you will need to find ways to give your children as much practical experience as possible in their chosen field (eg. Accounting, Computer Literacy, Art, Gardening, Plumbing, Sewing etc).
Prayerfully, research your options, asking God to guide you. Remember Proverbs 3:5,6 “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths.”
No, this is not the same curriculum as the more popular Sonlight at Sonlight.com. When a friend recommended Sonlight to me, I also found myself at Sonlight.com doing research and very impressed and excited with the curriculum. I was bitterly disappointed to find out I was looking at the ‘wrong’ Sonlight and discouraged by my first impression of the curriculum offered by Sonlight Education Ministries. However, when I showed my discoveries to my husband, he enthusiastically encouraged me to follow God’s original blueprint for our children’s education and to not worry about what the world has to offer. It was incredibly foreign to me as my own education did not follow God’s original blueprint. I decided to give the Family Bible Lessons a try, and I am so glad I did – I have never looked back!
Actually yes, I really love the coloring book they offer… but, you are right. I will try God’s original blueprint… thanks for the idea to give a try with FBL. Thank you Melinda. You are wonderful and so kind for me. God bless you sis
I had to chuckle – I used to be the same – trying to decide what to cook just before the meal with my stress levels rising by the minute (and therefore my irritation levels). Then I started planning! What a difference that made! Great tips here!
🙂 When I don’t do a meal plan for the week, guessing what to get at the grocery store is a headache and each day that week is ten times harder! With a meal plan, I can even delegate part of the cooking to my kids!
Wow I’m so surprised with this website, God has truly bless in order
for you to bless others , keep up the good work. Thank you so much for all this information, I am personally thankful for your hard work, may the lord bless you always.
You may possibly have missed out one of the most important aspect of baking bread!
The OVEN! (or fire). Without the heat from the fire or the oven, all the ingredients will be useless! It’s only in the heat of fiery trials that we grow! It may seem like we are burning up or scorching to death – but God is the perfect Chef and He knows just when it’s the right time to take us out of the oven of trials. – Too short and you will be undercooked and raw and not fit for eating – Too long and you will be burnt and useless. God knows the exact timing necessary for the furnace of trials in order to get all the ingredients to work together to produce a reflection of Him – The TRUE bread of life!
Thankyou for sharing your great treatment plan, it makes it so much easier to remember everything and a very valuable reference tool. May God bless each of us moms as we take care of our family’s health.
Hi Melinda!
Thanks for sharing the list of resources.
I have some questions:
1. Is the Moore curriculum free?
2. Is the Good and the Beautiful suitable for SDA?
Thanks!
Hi Christine! In answer to your questions:
1. I do not know much about the Moore curriculum as I have never used it or explored it as an option, but I do know that it isn’t free.
2. The Good and the Beautiful curriculum takes a non-denominational Christian worldview approach. They do not focus or teach anything religious, but instead acknowledge God in the general sense and encourage good morals. You can watch this youtube video to get more information: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kChE8yRlR58
I hope this answers your questions! Many thanks for your feedback 🙂
I’m really enjoying this blog!
Thank you for taking the time to write it.
So far I’ve found it useful and encouraging.
I’m grateful for the advice about establishing a routine. It’s God-sent to me. May God bless you for sharing it.
Thank you Melinda for making this curriculum so much easier. I was having a hard time to get my head around it then someone recommended your blog and what a joy to be able to do it with ease. May God continue to bless you and your family.
You are absolutely welcome Gift! I pray that God continues to bless you as you nurture your children’s characters! Please share with us your experience as you use these lessons!
Just want to say thank you for making time to share your journey with Sonlight Education. It has been a blessing to me and my family. I have shared your blog with my friends and family. The rainbow covenant section has been a great help for me in starting it with my boys. May God continue to bless you and your family.
Thank you Gift! Your feedback always means so much to me! 🙂 I am so thankful it has been a blessing to you – I only pray that God can use this blog to bring families closer together and closer to God. May we all be ready on that special day which I know deep down is coming SOON!
Hello Melinda! You have a beautiful blog! I thought I would correct a link for you. We do not have a SonLight public “group” it is our Facebook Page… all pages are public and for use of getting to know a business or ministry. When I clicked the link, it did not load properly. The correct link would be…
Thank you for sharing SonLight Education Ministry with others! You do a beautiful job and are thankful that you link back to us so others can be blessed by the materials that we offer.
Thank you so much Melissa for your feedback – I have updated the link and changed the shortcut names 🙂 The Sonlight curriculum has been a life-changing blessing to our family – thank you for all the time and effort you put in to keep it available for all! Please let me know if there are any other funnies that you notice 😉 Blessings – Melinda
Thank you so Melinda much for explaining the spelling cards and for making the curriculum much simpler. I’m still new but it is easy for me to follow. we are learning everyday.God bless you.
Thank you so much for taking time to put these resources together, especially the Sonlight one. I really appreciate your ideas and sample lessons. We will be starting the lessons 2-8 and i was praying and asking God for ideas and i saw your post on the sonlight fb group.
Again, thank you very much and may God continue to bless you and your family as you bless others.
Thank you so much Gift for your kind words and encouragement – it truly warms my heart! May God bless you and your family and I pray and hope you enjoy the Sonlight lessons! Keep us posted as to how it goes!
Hi Rachel
Yes, pages 7 and 8 deal with individual colours and where they are found in the sanctuary. I decided to cover this when I actually do the individual colours coming up at the end of the Rainbow Covenant Notebook. Sorry for the confusion – I do explain it on Day 7. I thought it would make more sense for us to do it that way – but it can also be done in normal sequential order … 🙂
So glad I found your blog! An answer to my prayers. I have been wondering how to go about starting the curriculum. How old are your girls? Mine are turning 7 and 9 in a few weeks. They are ready I feel but not so sure about the 7 yr old though she can read now and that’s why I feel she is ready. We have been through the FBL and are finishing in a couple of weeks. Do you supplement the 2-8 curriculum with other curriculums?
How wonderful! I am glad this has been a blessing to you! 🙂 My girls are 10 and 8. We do supplement with other curriculums (languages and maths). You will obviously also need to be accommodating of the homeschooling laws in your current location. Remember, also, that every family is different and that you will need to find a way that works for you. Understanding the outline for Lesson 1 has a bit more on supplementing. I would suggest not rushing into the Grade 2-8 lessons, but taking the time to give a good reading/writing foundation. Having said that, if your 7 year old can keep up, go for it! Just remember – it’s not a race – make it an enjoyable experience for all 🙂 Please note, Sonlight does have counselors that you can chat to (and I’m not one – just a mommy!) and they also have a great facebook support page. I pray it goes well for you and that you continue to be blessed!
Thank you so much! I was planning on starting in just over a week and was going to try doing a lesson a week! Lol! I am so glad I saw your article! It really helped me see how to use this. 🙂
Thank you so much more for the information, it’s very helpful to have someone who has tried to make spirit of prophecy practical in their lives. It brings so much hope, do not weary to send more of these
Thank you so much for sharing all of this information on your blog! I have been looking for guidance and inspiration on how to implement the Sonlight curriculum in our home!
God’s plan with our little lambs is simple, not easy but simple. The Bible, the character and nature, not some long list of things considered to be essential
Thank you Ntsoaki for sharing! The character building series “From Glory to Glory” from Revival Seminars is one of my favourite! I also enjoyed the series “Train Up a Child” 🙂
Enjoyed the post and high lighting the important parts, made it easier to read quickly. May this be shared far and wide?
May the Lord teach me to be useful for Him, my family and others in need.
Thank you so much, I’ve been teaching Sonlight for five years already ( four children)and I never could explain it so clearly!!
Looking forward for the 2-8 lessons description!!!
Be blessed in Jesus name .
Paula David.
Hi. I LIKE THE post about how to implement the bible lessons… do you have something like that for the Gr.2-7 age group? We have only been homeschooling since January this year and I have downloaded the curriculum but it seems very overwhelming and a lot of preparation? My children are gr.5 and gr.6 now.
Thanks for your lovely blog!
Hi Lelani! Thank you for the feedback! I had been planning to start the Grades 2-8 program with my girls this year, but it has been a difficult year for us and things haven’t gone according to plan 🙁 Nevertheless, as soon as I get things going I am definitely hoping to share more. This curriculum can look daunting and overwhelming to a new homeschooling family, but as the saying goes: how do you eat an elephant? one bite at a time! I would suggest taking it slow and simple. The Sonlight Facebook (closed) group is a great place for support. The Family Bible Lessons are for all ages and they are great for supplementing with other curriculums – you could even do the bible lesson during morning worship and the nature lesson during evening worship. May God continue to guide you on this homeschooling journey! We are all learning together! Melinda
Hehe! Being a mother and providing for your family is definitely not easy! These are the things I have learnt to do to help me stay sane! 🙂 But please don’t listen to my voice or follow my guidelines – your situation may be different to mine. Rather let God guide you to being a better mother and keeping your family healthy. He will teach you how! 🙂

Thank you for sharing these important thoughts, Melinda.
In every family there should be a fixed time for morning and evening worship. CCh 152.5
In the hustle and bustle of daily life, we sometimes don’t prioritize this time. Hurried prayer becomes the order of the day.

Hi Dewi
It is excellent that you are thinking ahead and trying to get the big picture of where you are heading with your children’s education. These are not easy questions to answer as I don’t believe there is one right answer for all families. Ultimately, you need to have a good think about what you are trying to achieve in educating your children.
Do you want them to have some kind of high school senior certificate which they may require to study further at a college or university? If so, this is still achievable – I know of a family which, after finishing the Grades 2-8 lessons, changed to the ACE curriculum which allowed them to get our South African Matric (Senior) certificate and study further in Europe. Just a small query
Your blog for Day 7 shows you covered pages 9-11
And day 8 you covered pages 7-8, 12 onwards
Was the above intentional ?

Hello Melinda,
God works in wonderful ways that we cannot imagine,
Your blog is such a blessing and so inspiring.
Thank you so much for giving your time which I know is so precious as a Homeschooling mum.
I shall keep you and your ministry in my prayers.

Thank you so much more for the information, it’s very helpful to have someone who has tried to make spirit of prophecy practical in their lives. It brings so much hope, do not weary to send more of these

Thank you for the encouragement! What is Spirit of Prophecy for, if not to be applied to our daily lives? 😉

God’s plan with our little lambs is simple, not easy but simple. The Bible, the character and nature, not some long list of things considered to be essential

You’re so right, Lynn! It seems that we love to over-complicate our lives!

Melinda

When some people hear plant based diet, they presume that all they can eat is a salad.

You make it soud so easy ?
December 21, 2017 at 11:19 am
